Chronic relapsers are those clients that may have been in multiple treatments, they have had long periods of recovery, they know the lingo, the tools, and "The Program", but they can't seem to stay clean and sober. It isn't always effective or clinically indicated to send that client back into "Treatment 101", and oftentimes a better option is to develop a specific course of treatment that deals exclusively with developing a "Relapse Prevention Plan" "Relapse is a process, not an event and by the time the addict picks up a drink or a drug they've been in relapse". Therapy may help the client to recognize their own relapse process.
Relapse is not an indication that the client has failed, nor does the client lose all the recovery "tools and information" they learned and practiced over the years. The relapsing client will always have that knowledge and history. They don't forfeit their recovery because they drank or used again, they just change their sobriety date. They need to learn to stop the relapse process and take the necessary action to get back into their recovery program.
It's important to work closely with the client to eliminate the shame and guilt associated with relapse. Those who are appropriate for this level of care will receive treatment plans, assignments and group therapy designed specifically for the relapse prone client. They assist the client in the "fine-tuning" process by identifying which components of their Recovery were working and which components need to be modified. They help the client to examine each period of recovery and each relapse episode to develop a recovery plan that is specific to their clinical issues and relapse triggers. Our belief is that if your recovery program does not address your specific issues it's just "busy-work" and destined to fail.
Another aspect of treatment that is included in but not limited to "Chronic Relapse Therapy", is a clinical focus on underlying core issues. Often times these issues continue to plague and sabotage one's recovery despite their best efforts. Lingering issues of low self-esteem, self-doubt and self-hatred are often the result of unresolved childhood trauma. We work closely to identify the self-defeating ways of believing and behaving that undermine the recovery process. "Chronic Relapse Therapy" provides a safe and structured environment to do this work. For the chronic relapser this work becomes part of the final relapse prevention plan.
